November Is Long-Term Care Month

Every November we celebrate Long Term Care Awareness Month to help spread the word about the importance of this particular type of insurance coverage. Many people assume that their private health insurance or Medicare will pay for long term care expenses. However, your insurance will likely only cover doctor and hospital bills, the rest of your long term care expenses will be your responsibility.

We want to educate you about the benefits of having long term care insurance for you and your loved ones, which is why we list the some of the facts that were reported in the 2018 Insurance Barometer Study and by the U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services.

  • About a third of people claim that long term care expenses are one of their top financial concerns. However, only 15% of people have long term care coverage.
  • Unpaid caregivers provide 80% of long term care at home. On average, caregivers spend 20 hours a week with their patients.
  • While only 15% of people have long term care polices, 57% of people say they personally need long term care insurance.
  • Although long term caregivers are often unpaid, 58% are responsible for assisting with critical needs, such as bathing and feeding.
  • 8% of people between the ages of 40 and 50 have a disability that might make them need long term care services.
  • 69% of people age 90 and above are disabled.
  • On average, a home health aide costs $135 a day or $4,099 a month.
  • On average, an assisted living facility can cost a person $123 a day or $3,750 a month.
  • The average cost of a room at a private nursing home is $267 a day or $8,121 a month.

By taking out a long term care insurance plan, you will have access to high-quality care if you ever become disabled.
